Yes, it's an Iain Banks reference! This is a long exposure HDR shot of the Falkirk Wheel ([link]), a modern marvel which allows boats to go between canals linking Edinburgh and Glasgow.
It was only opened 8 or so years ago so it's got nice and interesting modern architecture to it. It's a very photographed spot.
